What does colonoscopy preparation involve?

Preparation empties the bowel so the specialist can examine it. Your appointment instructions explain food and drink changes, when to stop eating and drinking, and how to take the bowel-cleansing medicine. Read them before preparation begins and contact the service if anything is missing or unclear. Tell the team about your medicines; do not use this guide to change them yourself.

What can I eat before a colonoscopy?

Use the food list and timing supplied for your appointment. For example, NHS guidance describes plain foods such as white rice or pasta in the days before the test, but also directs readers to their appointment letter. That example is not a universal three-day menu. Your clinic’s instructions determine which foods and drinks are suitable and when to stop them.

What happens during the examination?

A flexible tube with a camera passes through the anus to examine the large bowel. The specialist may take tissue samples or remove polyps. Comfort options vary by service. Ask what is planned for you and what arrangements you need afterwards.

Understand your preparation instructions

Looking for a colonoscopy prep schedule or what to eat before your appointment? Keep your clinic’s written instructions beside you as you explore. This tool helps you identify questions about those instructions; it does not create a prescribed diet, medication plan or personalised preparation schedule.

Explore the procedure and what comes next

Move between the care timeline, procedure, preparation and results lessons. The visual route helps you follow the explanation, while guided questions help you decide what you want to ask at your next conversation with the care team.

Keep your questions together

Add questions to My guide as you learn, then review them before your appointment. The guide stays in this browser and does not transfer into the Gutsphere app. Keep a separate copy of anything you need for your visit.
